12ERWC Discussion Board– Temple Grandin

There are two posts due by midnight on Sunday, 1/22.

1)Knowing that the film Temple Grandin  is part of our Justice: Childhood Love Lessons unit, what particular part(s) were especially memorable, poignant, and/or fitting?  Write a well-developed paragraph discussing the film.

2)  Do a bit of research on something that you found interesting or want to know more about after watching Temple Grandin.  You could look up her biography, her writings, an interview, her squeeze-machine, her effects on the cattle industry, facts & statistics on autism, information and interviews for the making of the film, etc.  Make sure you discuss what you found and give the source where you found the information.

**If you were absent for any of the days when we watched the film, you must do 2 research elements for #2.

12ERWC Discussion Board– Slam Poetry– due 1/15/12

Reminder:  Most of you did not have a chance to finish the article quiz during class on Friday.  Remember this is due when we come back to school on Tuesday!

One of the options for your Poetry Reading on Finals day is Slam Poetry.

Watch the examples of Slam Poetry below and make comments about your favorite ones and/or parts.  Notice word choice, delivery, creativity, and especially, the message.  Give each presentation a chance as slam poetry often starts out silly, strange, or quirky, and then gains momentum, and finally drives home the point at the very end.

At least one post is due by Sunday, 1/15, at midnight.  Enjoy!  And start thinking about your original poem!  Might you do slam poetry??

12 ERWC The Cove

If you were absent for our fishbowl discussion on Friday, 12/16, you must respond to the following:

1)  What is your reaction and response to The Cove?  You may discuss anything– specific parts, economic/political/ cultural issues, the way the film was created, what the film made you wonder about, what you wish they would have included, etc.  Write a lengthy response.

2)  One aspect the film did not include– that would be an interest especially to Americans– is Sea World’s point of view.  Here is their response to the film:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32274599/ns/travel-news/t/dolphin-hunt-film-sparks-dilemma-tourists/

Read the article and write a paragraph-long response.

**  If you would like to join the conversation (and earn some extra credit) you can respond to #2 above or #3 below (or both):

3)  Go to The Cove’s website and look around.  Discuss something interesting you found there.  http://www.takepart.com/cove

11AP Essay Links

To help with MLA parenthetical citations and MLA Works Cited page:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/

To use the InfoTrak database.  Password is ventura.  Search The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and click on Journals on the left– these are academic journals and will probably be your best bet.

http://vhslibrary.weebly.com/research.html

The County Library’s database is excellent.  You need to enter your library card number.  Click on Literature and it will take you to two databases– Gale is exactly like InfoTrak and the Literature Resource Center is great.  http://157.145.215.81:81/rpa/default/RPA_redr.htm#literature

Happy researching and writing!  :)

12ERWC Discussion Board due Sunday, 12/11

I found this presentation on one of Rifkin’s books called The Empathic Civilisation.  The presentation is very cool (I think it is Jeremy Rifkin’s voice), and there are some interesting points to consider and some connections to the article “A Change of Heart About Animals.”

Watch the presentation (10 minutes, but it goes really quickly).  Jot down some ideas so you remember them.

Choose one interesting idea to discuss.  Only one post this week, so make sure you elaborate (and spell check!).  Of course, feel free to respond to others’ posts as well.

12ERWC– Animal Research Assignment

Using your group’s topic/ question, complete the following steps:

1)  Research your topic using InfoTrack.  This is the only acceptable method to research for this assignment.  The article you choose must:  1)  Be an opinion piece (you do not have to agree with it though) not just an informational article  2)  Must be over 400 words in length

Hints:  **Use the Advanced Search tool. ** Check the box for full text articles only.  ** On the left there are options for magazines, journals, and news– try all of them. ** And be patient; it is called REsearch for a reason!

Click on the InfoTrac icon:  http://vhslibrary.weebly.com/research.html

2)  Print out the article.

3)  Read and annotate the article.

4) Answer the following questions (this part must be typed, MLA format, double-spaced):

     A.  What was the article’s main claims and arguments?  What proof did the     author use?  (1/2 a page minimum)

    B.  Do you agree or disagree with the author and the article?  Why or why not?  (1/2 page minimum)

** Bring in the article and the assignment on Monday.  Keep your group accountable– your assignment on Monday will depend on it!  If a group member doesn’t show on Monday, it is just as bad as not doing the assignment.
