I thought it was awful that Dufrain was sentenced to a life in prison for a crime he didn’t even commit. It makes me think of other people who may have been given lifetime sentences for crimes they didn’t even commit, and almost makes me question the judicial system and how juries decide the fate of a person. I also thought the scenes where Red was stating whether he was rehabilitated or not were fitting towards our justice unit because it shows that if we try kids as adults, then even then they will still have a chance of being released before their life sentence as up, and they could maybe not even be rehabilitated at all. This backs up my belief that kids shouldn’t be tried as adults and instead should be given help in a real center of rehabilitation.

The Shawshank Redemption is a dramatic movie that has the power that moves you. It tells the story of a banker who gets charge with killing his wife and her lover. He makes friends with red over the two decades in Shawshank prison. The guards soon guard him because he helped them with finical need. This plus many other things show how wrong the justice system is. One scene in the movie shows a guy getting shot because he knows who had killed the wife and lover. I felt this movie was true testimony to the human sprit, it was filled with hopes and dreams proved to anyone that nothing is impossible. My favorite quote of the movie is when frank says, “I guess it comes down to simply choice really get busy living or get bust dying”. This quote stuck in my head and made me think of the way I have been living my life. This is a movie that I would recommend to anyone one and one I would love to own.

I thought that “The Shawshank Redemption” was a good movie. I liked how they portrayed the prison and didn’t make it seem like it was that bad. The part that I remembered because it was shocking is when the warden shot the prisoner because he knew the truth about Andy. The other part of movie that weird but true is when Brooks was going to leave and he didn’t want to because he doesn’t know how to live a normal life. All together this movie was very good and I wouldn’t mind to watch it again

The most memorable scene in the film was when the prison was being taken over and the Ward being arrested, after Andy released the scandal of his work in the prison. Then the Ward going for his safe finding out that is was a swap that had a cut-out of the pick Andy used to make a tunnel out of the prison, and finally the Ward shooting himself with a revolver so he would not go to a prison himself. Another scene was the actual escape itself of Andy. Having to dig that tunnel, with a small pick, and that took him almost 20 years, which I found unbelievable to happen, then descending down to the sewer pipes, knowing when to hit it and how to make that size of a hole, being that determined to really go through a “shit hole” and become free. I absolutely loved this film.

I had never before seen The Shawshank Redemption so I had no idea what was going to happen next and it always kept me on my feet what was going to happen next. I thought that it was really interesting that through the whole movie you didn’t quite know if Dufrain had committed the crime or not, and then towards the end you find out that he didn’t. Other memorable parts in the movie were when the crew at Shawshank found out that he was a banker and they had him do all of their taxes and things like that and it felt like he wasn’t really like an inmate anymore. I really liked the ending when you find out that he escaped from the prision and never came back and no one ever found him again because he changed his name and everything. It related to the justice uint by showing that sometimes even adults don’t get the right sentencing. They might have not done the crime but they still get punished very harshly for doing something people think they did but know they didn’t.

It was horrific to see Dufrain sent to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. It made me curious as to how frequent the tragedy of sending an innocent man to jail is. Additionally, I found the scenes in which the prison guards were beating the prisoners to be horrific. It was highly unpleasant to watch those parts and I’d like to believe that was just used for dramatization and that the prisons don’t actually operate under such strict rules. When Red discussed how he hadn’t been rehabilitated after his 40th year in jail, it made me question how much attention and care we’re giving to the prisoners. I know that sounds ridiculous because they are criminals, but I believe the process of rehabilitation is to teach them to become better, healthier, danger-free members of society, and prison definitely doesn’t do that. My favorite scenes were the end when Andy and Red were reunited as well as the scene showing Andy escaping. “Get busy living or get busy dying” was a capturing line as well. I think this whole movie was phenomenal.

The Shawshank Redemption was just an excellent movie that I loved very much. From all of the seemingly tense moments including the beatings, awkwardness and sweet sweet justice. I loved how in the end Dufram got his justice back and when he dug for 25+ years which seems kindove sketchy though. Through all of those years it took him that long and no police or guards ever checked that provocative picture of that jungle lady. I thought it was a very good movie though and was really fun to watch during sixth period.

  8. Alison Schiele

I was surprised with ending of The Shawshank Redemption because it seems like movies like that always end horribly and this one ended with a warm happy reunion. I think the most memorable part was when Andy was crawling his way through the sewer pipe: it was absolutely disgusting. It was also upsetting when the captain shot Tommy right after he had found out that he had passed his GED test. I thought at the last minute that they would let him go and it totally took me by surprise when they shot him! I think this movie fits well with our unit on justice because it showed how a jury judges you by the way you act in court and the general dynamics of jail. One of the first scenes of the film was the judge telling Andy that he thought was cold and unsettling, and that was why he found him guilty. Also, when Tommy went to jail he was taken in by Andy and Red and their friends which makes it seem like younger people in jail are a little bit more protected than everyone else. I know that Tommy wasn’t a juvenile but it seems like juveniles in prison would be looked out for by the older inmates and I don’t think that would happen in juvenile hall.

  9. Dakota Thompson

I really enjoyed watching “Shawshank Redemption” because it grabbed my attention and it had a great twist. The most memorable part was definitely the ending. I thought that the main character was going to hang himself but he ended up getting away. I loved this part because he out-smarted the prison system and got a second chance at life. It was also interesting to see how throughout his whole stay at the prison the guards never caught him digging in the wall. I thought this was very clever and I’m glad that he got away. This movie also got me to thinking if other people are put in this situation in present time. I figured this probably does happen and it is unfortunate that citizens are put in prison for a crime that they never committed. Also security systems are a lot more efficient in prisons and escaping is very rare. Overall this movie really opened my eyes to what really sometimes goes on in prison and how the justice system isn’t always accurate. I would definitely watch this movie again and recommend it to people.

  10. Sawyer Brown

I loved the movie “The Shawshank Redemption.” The part that made me most on the edge of my seat, was when I found out that Andy did not actually commit the murder. I think one of the biggest problems with the justice system is they do make mistakes, and an innocent person like Andy can loose their life due to a wrong conviction. Also, I thought it was sad how Brooks had been in the Jail for practically his whole life, and that’s all he new, and then they just threw him out into the new world with no counseling or anything. I think the similar thing happens in the real world and most people just end up going back to jail when they get out.

  11. Corynn McAtee

After watching the movie “The Shawshank Rebellion” I see prison and the role of prison with a different light. The part that stuck with me the most was the loss of hope to those who were in prison too long. Prison life was all they knew. Prison should not be a place that people are sent to and eventually desensitized to the rest of the world, yet it should be a place that rehabilitates. When old Brooks was finally released from a life in jail, he did not understand the outside world and wanted nothing more than to either return to his old life, or leave life all together. That part of the movie left the strongest impression on me and overall the movie was very interesting.

  12. Stephanie Kam

“The Shawshank Redemption” was a great film and was also very eyeopening. I saw a lot of shocking scenes that are likely occurring in jails to this day. The most unbelievable part was the cruelty of the people running the jail. It felt hopeless knowing that the people in charge of keeping order were so corrupt. It was ironic that they were supposed to be watching over the prisoners to uphold the laws, yet they themselves acted as criminals and were completely unjust. This was especially seen when they killed Tommy because of his knowledge on Andy’s innocence and brutally beat other prisoners to death. However, I loved that Andy was able to completely outsmart everyone and come up with a whole unexpected plan in which he could escape while also getting his revenge. It was interesting and sad to see that when people were finally released from the jail they didn’t know what to do with themselves. But, it was awesome that, in the end, Red was able to find Andy’s message in the rocks and reunite with him.

  13. Araceli Yepez- Acosta

The movie Shawshank Redemption was perfect for our justice unit. It definitely touched on topics such as: sentencing, rehabilitation, prison life, maltreatment, punishments, etc. The thing I loved the most about the movie was Andy’s concept of hope and dreams; Red and the other prisoners didn’t even remember what life was like outside of the stone walls, but Dufrain never gave up. I thought that it was interesting how much corruption there is in prisons, because we all know that most prisons are like that. We are so quick to want to try juveniles as adults and yes they deserve to pay for their crimes, but is it right to put them in places like Shawshank? It is so disturbing to see movies like these, because no one likes to see these things that we hear about but don’t endure ourselves. Although, it is essential that we have an awareness about what is going on. Bottom line, this movie was great in capturing prison life, but it’s hard to admit that things like this really happen and that for some people, it’s a reality.

  14. Janet Boswell

I thought that “Shawshank Redemption” was an interesting movie. I think this movie worked for our justice unit because it showed how the justice systems works and how the prisoners are really treated. The best part of the whole movie was when Dufresne was put into the infirmary because of that weird red headed man. Then Red’s friends all dug for some kind of rock that they made into his chess set. It showed that prisoners are good people that can change. Overall it was a great movie.

  15. Anna Kelsch

In the movie The Shawshank Redemption it shows just how not perfect the judicial system is. For a man, in this case Dufrain, to be sentenced to life for a crime that he didn’t commit is so shocking and terrible. It makes me think that this happens to real people, in real situations, and in real life. The scene when the warden took the young man outside to ask him about Dufrain and the man who really killed his wife, and how he was killed because it wasn’t what the warden wanted hear is such an intense scene and really shows how there isn’t any boundaries for the people in charge. This movie did a great job of showing what it is like to be in prison and showed all the scary and dramatic aspects that go on. When Dufrain escaped prison and finally was free it was as if justice had finally been served and that innocent people never should be in prison. I really enjoyed this movie. It touched me in the sense of wanting to make our judicial system better and that no innocent human deserves to go to jail.

  16. Jessica Lansden

Shawshank Redemption I believe was a great movie. It really gave you an insight on what prison was like and the justice system. One of the scenes that really stuck to me was when the guard beat up the man on his first night. Another was when they took the younger inmate out in the yard at night and shot him dead because he knew Andy was innocent. The justice system is wrong and sneaky in this movie and I’m sure it is like that in real life. Overall I really did enjoy this movie and am more aware of the way people in prison think and how they are treated.

  17. Rachel Hawkins

I though “The Shawshank Redemption” was an excellent movie, I was surprised that I enjoyed it since it was a prison movie. I think that the ending was the best. I guessed from the begging that Andy was innocent but it was so unfair that he had to serve twenty years in prison for a crime he didn’t even commit. It makes me wonder about the justice system. I can’t believe that he escaped; on the one hand I’m glad because he shouldn’t have been there but on the other it’s a little creepy if a real murderer escaped like that. The movie did a good job at showing how awful prison was, especially when the “sisters” were bullying Andy and then how the guards nearly beat the head “sister” to death. Also the warden and the guards were horrible; they were so hypocritical. I don’t think that anyone even murderers should be treated so inhumane like they did.

  18. Danielle Rose

The Shawshank Redemption was a movie that really opened my eyes to what goes on in prison. As we saw with Brooks, some people are not able to adjust to the “outside world” after being released. Jail was the only thing that Brooks knew and because of that he took his own life. When we discussed whether juveniles should be tried as adults, I had originally thought that we should. I agreed that the justice system should have the flexibility to do so in certain cases. However, this movie shows that putting young criminals in prison can make them institutionalized over the course of many years, which makes it hard for them to live life outside of prison (as we saw with Brooks). I see now that rehabilitation and trying young criminals as juveniles may be best if the court system wants them to have a chance at a good future after their sentence. The most memorable scene for me was when the guard shot Tommy. I originally had hope that Andy Dufresne would be proven innocent because of the evidence that Tommy provided. I enjoyed the scene when it showed Andy escaping and taking the prison’s money. He had planned everything out so thoroughly. Also, the reunion between Red and Andy was a pleasant ending.

  19. There were many very memorable parts that went through my mind after watching Shawshank, but the most memorable part for me was the brutality and horror prisoners go through in prison. I tried thinking what it would be like in prison, to be sentenced for life, to spend years in a dark cold cell, where men rape other men, and where the guards can do pretty much anything they want to you, and I realized that prison is a dark part of our society. Its hard for me to grasp the fact that men and women waste their lives away there, where some never get a chance to walk free ever again, and the fact that some of them are innocent, doing someone else’s time where they waste their lives away in a cell for doing nothing. Prison is the last place I ever want to end up. This was a great movie.

  20. Rachel Becerra

The movie “Shawshank Redemption” was a very interesting/good movie. The part that I found most interesting was seeing Andy explaining so many times to many people that he did not commit the murder of his wife and lover, but still no one believed he was telling the truth. The jurors had sentenced him to life in prison because they “thought” that was the most fitting sentence, and so did many other people did too given the evidence and the situation. So Andy had his life taken away from him at that point because people in the court room decided his fate. In our justice system today I’m sure that happens to many other innocent people and I don’t think that’s right. Everyone makes mistakes, but a big one like taking others lives away can be a huge mistake. Fixing that problem can obviously be a solution, but it’s up to our justice system to do the fixing.

  21. Kaeliana Rabago

I have to start this by saying that this movie is now one of my all time favorites. My favorite part I think the most fitting part to the justice unit would be when Andy sends the letter about all the happened at the prison and gets his revenge on the warden and the guards in one foul sweep. It applies the most to the unit because it shows justice being gained for wrongful treatment and plain abuse of power. I’m so glad we watched this movie because now I think I can see people really can be innocent and you don’t need to hurt everyone in the process the obtain justice.

  22. Matt McFadden

Some memorable parts from The Shawshank Redemption was when the warden called the young prisoner outside to discuss the information regarding the innocence of Andy. The warden asked if Blatche was the one behind the murder and if the young prisoner would swear in court that he was telling the truth. Then the guard hidden on balcony fires off 4 rounds killing the prisoner. This was one of the strongest scenes of the movie showing the greed and corruption of Shawsank. This relates to our justice unit because it shows that crime plus corruption exists and can continue for a period of crime, but a criminals run can’t last forever. A higher power will always bring you to justice and hand out a sentencing worthy of that crime.

  23. Veronica Ruvalcaba

The movie The Shawshank Redemption was a really interesting movie that talked about life in prison. The movie made me realize that although most of the men in prison had committed serious crimes these men turned out to be very nice people. Most of the men who were shown in the movie really looked out for their friends in prison. A lot of these men were given harsh punishments getting beat up harshly and often spent much time in “the hole,” and I feel like none of these men deserved to be treated harshly, yes they made serious crimes but that does not make them inhuman. I really liked the ending of the movie, I love Andy’s smart way of escaping and the pay back he does to Warden.

  24. Allia Knight

The most memorable part of The Shawshank Redemption was the quote, “Get busy living or get busy dying.” The motif of hope throughout the movie that Andy displayed went along well with this quotation and proved to be a major theme. The hope that Andy carried with him through the terrible Shawshank Prison was remembered by many of the prisoners even after he left. He was a man who was respected and looked up to because he never became “institutionalized.” From this concept I think we can get many life lessons including that we cannot let out circumstance dictate our life and our hope. As Andy said, “I guess it comes down to a simple choice really. Get busy living or get busy dying.” Even though he was put away for two life sentences, and in no way am I commending that escaping from Prison is the right thing to do, but he never let it get the best of him, and that was a very inspiriting aspect of the film.

  25. Enrique G. Orozco

This movie, “Shawshank Redemption,” was an amazing movie, one of the best I have ever seen if I must say. It was an all around great film which left the viewer in suspense,  throughout the whole movie. To me, the most memorable moment in this film was when the warden had the prisoner shot because he knew about Andy’s innocence, and was willing to vouch for him in court. It was a cowardly way to solve his so called “problem.” The warden did not eat to lose Andy’s help, so he did the only selfish thing there was to do. When he asked the prisoner outside, I already saw it was suspicious and was thinking exactly what happened (In a way). I thought he was going to try and escape, but instead they framed him and simply made it look as though he did try to escape. It was a movie that I didn’t expect to be good, it surprised me in every aspect. It was just great

  26. Aidan Kelly

Shawshank Redemption was such a great movie and I didn’t expect it to be. But it really touched on all the aspects of jail life and our legal system. It was hard to watch some scenes where the guards treated the prisoners so unfairly. It was ironic that they’re breaking the law when they are supposed to be enforcing it. Especially going to the point if shooting a man. It was also interesting to see how the prisoners still acquired items they wanted through Morgan Freeman’s character. And the guards didn’t seem to notice either! The best part though was Andy’s dedication to escape the prison. That he knows he was innocent but he still abides by the rules until the day came where he escaped and got the freedom he deserved all along!

  27. Aaron Gibson

The movie Shawshank Redemption I thought was a great movie. I thought it related very good with our justice unit. I really thought Andy Dufrain was guilty at first but it turns out he wasn’t. That was the biggest shock to me in the movie. What this shows is that the justice system isn’t always right and this probably does happen to some people. I don’t know how we could fix this but maybe we just need to do something different in our justice system so that this doesn’t happen to innocent people. It really is horrible because Andy Dufrain is a really good guy and to know that could be happening to people today is sad. I really like how the movie ended and thought it was a very good movie.

  28. Jammal Ennis

The Shawshank Redemption was tight. The movie was very interesting and it was well directed the part that caught my attention the most was when the wardern shot the prisoner just because he knew the truth.Another part that i enjoyed is the whole escaping scene. Overall i could watch that movie alot more times i enjoyed it.

  29. Jam Swader

I really enjoyed watching “Shawshank Redemption” and it’s a great movie to portray the bad parts of our legal system. One scene I found especially memorable and fitting with our studies of justice was when they were evaluating Red. They asked him wether or not he was rehabilitated from his stay at Shawshank. His answer just about summed everything up. He was not rehabilitated but rather wasn’t the same boy who had committed that crime. This shows some flaws in our legal system even more in trying children as adults.

  30. Sage Ryan

I thought that the movie, “Shawshank Redemption,” was extremely intriguing and interesting. I also felt that it gave us a good view on the judicial system and whatnot. I couldn’t wait for the ending to find out what would happen to Red and Andy, and if they’d ever see each other again. But the one part that really stood out to me was how easy it was for Red to smuggle various, random items into the jail. I didn’t understand how all those things just made it into the jail without any of the guards finding out, and confiscating the items; now I’m wondering if it really is that easy to get stuff into jails like that, it’s so shocking to me.

  31. Molly Watkins

In watching “The Shawshank Redemption,” the part that stuck out to me the most was the death of Brooks, and the idea that once you’ve been institutionalized for a certain amount of time, that begins to be all you know. Though mental effects of long sentences should not mitigate the punishments handed down to violent offendors, it’s still an interesting thing to think about; at age 14, you can make the worst mistake of your life and spend your lifetime (multiplied by 5 or 6) in an extremely concentrated society. For example, Red was a young man when he committed the crime that landed him in Shawshank, and by the time his parole was granted, he had spent more of his lifetime behind bars than he had a free man. Brooks’ situation was similar, and when he was finally freed, the new freedom became a stressor. A man who had never before ridden in an automobile was thrusted into a world dominated by car travel and forced to work a medial job and live in a bare apartment; and 80 year-old man who was never given a chance to really start his life made to begin again at the very bottom, taking orders from a guy half his age. This social injustice, which the characters brought upon themselves, was a part of the film that really made me think.

  32. Billy Davidson

Shawshank Redemption was an intense movie, and I really enjoyed watching it! I feel that sometimes our prison system is corrupt as seen in the scene where they took the younger prisoner out in the yard and shot him because he knew Andy was an innocent man. Not only did the prison shoot the younger inmate, they beat prisoners to no end and some to death. Another interesting part was when Brooks got out after being in jail for almost his whole life, and not knowing how to handle the new world; he seemed very lost and I feel that the prison should have helped him in the right path instead of just throwing him on the streets and saying “good luck.” This movie was really interesting and I really enjoyed it! Overall, I feel it showed how prison really is, and how inmates get out and a lot of times, feel like they should be put back in prison.

  33. Reed Nothwang

I thought that “The Shawshank Redemption” was an amazing movie. It really changed my opinion of what prison would be like. In some ways it was better than I thought, but in most ways, it was much more terrible than I could ever have imagined. I didn’t know that the prison guards were allowed to beat inmates almost to death. The scene that really had me on the edge of my seat was when the warden tricked Tommy, who had revealed that Andy was actually innocent, in to coming out of the prisoners area. Then all of sudden Tommy gets shot and dies, and no one is able to prove Andy’s innocence. Overall it was a really good movie and definitely worth the nomination for an Oscar.

  34. Beau Clarke

I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of Shawshank Redemption. As soon as the prosecuting scene took place and Andy was make clever and snide comebacks to the attorney, I was roped in. I thought the actor who played Andy did a amazing job at portraying a shady genius of a character. I could never guess what was going through his head but he always a step ahead of the game. Another character I liked was the Warden. He had just the right amount of hippocracy and irony to make a great villain. At first I was thinking he was a good warden and believed in a good God and really wanted to help the criminals by disciplining them. But then he would murder people for moneys sake. And the transformation that all the characters go through from beginning to end really seals the deal as a great movie.

  35. Jose Hernandez

Shawshank Redemption, which is an inspirational movie about the prison world, was magnificent and nothing like I thought it would be. I have watched a lot of gangster prison movies, but Shawshank brought a different perspective on things. Morgan Freeman’s idea of being “institutionalized,” was an idea I have never thought about. It made me think that maybe, released prisoners commit crimes to be returned into a society that make sense to them. Dufrain’s idea that hope is a good thing is a strange idea coming from in a prison, I would of said that hope is irrational in a prison. Although I did agree in his idea that we either “get busy living, or get busy dying,” because one must live without regret, because living without purpose isn’t really living.

  36. Rolf Reeves

There were many memorable moments in Shawshank Redemption. One that I specifically remembered was when the warden did not try to help Andy after there was evidence that he might be free. The warden was only interested in making money and he needed Andy to do that, which was the warden’s eventual demise. Also the fact that the warden had the only person who could set Andy free killed. Another part that I found interesting was when the inmates were talking about how they did not know how to live outside and be a free man and how a life behind bars was all they knew.

  37. Juan Llamas

This was the first time I have watched this film. I thought it was a very good film and I couldn’t guess what wouldbhaooen next. The part of the film I though was very intense was the part when the new guy was asked if he would put his hand on the bible and testify and whether said yes he got shot immediately. I was definitely not expecting that I thought the warden was actually going to give the trial a chance. Also I found it very surprising how far he got through the prison walls with a rock hammer. That’s tool is so small but yet he managed to escape from the prison. I also liked his attitude and how he thought about his group of friends before thinking about himself when he told the guards to get beers for his friends in exchange for his services. Over all this was a very good film and I wouldn’t mind watching it again if I had to.

    • Taylor Livingston

I also loved Shawshank Redemption. Like Juan I was shocked when the warden killed the only man who could help prove that Andy was inoccent all along. It just goes to show how far people are willing to go to protect themselves and in this case, their money. I found it very ironic that the warden himself was a God fearing man and yet he treated people badly, swore on several occasions, and broke the law. Most of the people working at the prison were nasty people who also broke the law in many situations. I couldn’t help but flinch every time Hadley would beat one of the prisoners – even to the point of death. How are these criminals supposed to change their ways and turn their lives around when all they’re surrounded with is violence and negativity? I don’t think the prison guards wanted them to be helped. Rather, I think they were content with beating them into submission until they eventually die. I think this movie gave good insight into the other world that lies within prison and I would definitely recommend this film.

  38. austin saito

My favorite part of Shawshank Redemption was the part when the warden knew that he was going to be arrested so he pulled out and loaded his gun, but at the last minute i was thinking to myself that he was going to shoot who ever opened the door instead he shot and killed himself. The reason why that was my favorite part is because i totally did not even think about if he was going to kill himself and then once it happened i was just mind blown. I wish that i could have seen the beginning to fully understand the whole movie! I want to finish this by saying that prison is no where like Shawshank Redemption you do not get apple pie’s from the warden, you don’t have rights, and it’s not fun. Austin out.

  39. Robert Marlow

One scene I found especially memorable in the film was the part where Mr Dufresne was sent to the hole for a month and soon after was informed that Tommy, the man Andy took under his wing, was shot trying to “escape”. This was most memorable to me because at this point in the film the audience has the belief that Andy may have found his ticket out of being incarcerated, but when the news of Tommys death reaches him the look on his face causes the viewers to share the feeling of hopelessness and despair, that he is experiencing. This scene was very emotional and powerful, overall the movie was great.

  40. Jesse Toyooka

I thought this movie was very interesting, it coaught my attension the whole time. One of my favorite parts was when he got the little tool and Red thought he was going to try to break out of prison when later he did. Who knew he was carving at the wall for twenty years, i didn’t like when he had to crawl throught that little poop pipe for half a mile. I really liked when he turn the tables on the warden and he was going to get arrested, but he shot himself i wanted him to go to jail!!! I thought it was very sad when Brooks hung himself, but overall this was a GREAT movie and i wish it was longer.

    • Herlinda Garcia

I thought this movie was alright. it didnt catch alot of my attention. But i agree with you one part that did catch my attention was when he would use the tool to carve and then he noticed it was breaking and he used the tool to escape. even though he carved it for 20 years im glad he got away because he wasnt the one who killed the girl. Yeah it was gross when he had to crawl through the poop pipe line but it shows what a determined person he was to escape. i also thought it was sad how brooks hung himself and it was ironic how red ended up in his room at the end.

  41. Melany Balbuena

The Shawshank Redemption was a good movie. The part that is really memorable, was when Banker who gets charged for killing his wife makes a difference in a lot of peoples life trough the movie. When he made the library to help every one out. I like how they didn’t make the prison seem as if it was the worse place to be in. For example Brooks had a harder time out of jail then inside he couldn’t adjust to the life outside and eventually killed himself. I think this was a great film and everyone should watch it, it can teach you a lot about life.

Shawshank Redemption is now one of my favorite movies. It was such a power movie. What stood out the most to me was the ending when Andy collected all of the wardens money. It was such a powerful thing because the innocent always receive redemption and the evil always receive what they deserve. The warden killed himself before he was arrested and the gun man that shot down the new guy that could have proven Adam to be innocent also was arrested. The movie was a perfect movie for our justice unit because it showed all aspects of our justice system and the changes that have came.

There were two very memorable and fitting moments in “The Shawshank Redemption” for me. The first was when Andy escaped prison and was standing in the rain, arms spread, embracing the freedom he had gained. It was significant because he was innocent the entire time and it had taken him 20 years to finally be free. The second memorable part was when the warden was about to get arrested. The sounds of sirens in the background ring while the quote’ “his judgment cometh and that right soon…” is shown in the background. The warden finally got what was coming to him and the balance seemed restored as Andy was free and the warden was about to be arrested.

Such a great movie! There were so many memerable parts. One part I found really sad was when Brooks killed himself because he was affraid of the outside world.Another sad part was in the begining when the new prisoner was beat to death by the security guard for screaming at night becuase he was scared. I couldnt believe how much the guards got away with there. Andy was also such a great character. He was so motivated to stay a good person, even though he was convicted for life. He was always wanting to help others like by getting the money for the library, getting peoples GED’s and also those beers for the inmates. The end was hilarious!! Andy had been digging the hole for 29 years and no one ever found out! For the guards beeing extremly strict, they are also very dumb. Over all very inspiring movie. I definetly want to watch it again sometime.

  45. Lizzy Hatfield

My favorite part of the movie was how in general Andy Dufresne made the best of his situation, and sometimes for the others around him, too. For example, he took a big risk approaching the guard about the sum of money he got, and helped him take the money tax-free, in exchange for a morning with some cold beers for him and his work-mates. And after he earned a position in the prison library, he immediately set to work trying to get more books and resources for the library. After a long wait, he got a lukewarm response — a check for $200. He then went to twice the effort, and forced the state senate to allocate $500 dollars a year to the library to get him to quit sending them letters. The library became an actual library, even equipped with a record player, and a place for inmates to enjoy. Overall, he rarely sulked, sometimes he appeared to, but was usually just caught in his own mind. (And the narration of Morgan Freeman, naturally)

  46. Tim Strickland

This was not my first time watching the Shawshank Redemption and I still think its a great movie as I did after my first time watching it. The greatest part in my opinion has to be when he escapes from the prison and emerges from the sewer and stands in the rain in what was his first moment of freedom in 20 years or so. The very end where Andy and Morgan Freeman reunite on the beach in Mexico was an especially great ending because it shows that the characters found happiness in each other’s friendship after a life spent in prison

I had never seen “Shawshank Redemption” full through, only parts it was good to see the parts fit and I loved all the twists. I didn’t like the fact that Andy was automatically accused because his wife was having an affair, it felt like the judge/ jury didn’t take any other angle on the case. The way Andy spent his time at Shawshank Prison really gave the impression that he had something planned. The part about Brooks was really intense, the fact that he had spent his whole life prison and didn’t know anything about the outside life was sad. He had mentioned that he had never seen so many automobiles in his life; you just felt so much sympathy for this poor old guy. When Andy found out that some one knew he was innocent was a breakthrough in the movie yet he never really got anywhere with it. The end of the movie was the best. I also love how when Red went in for his last evaluation he spoke truthfully and I felt he now had a reason to leave that prison even if he didn’t know what his next step would be. A very impressive movie in my eyes.

  48. Taylor Salinas

Shawshank Redemption was a great movie. I think the most memorable was the ending. I love movies with happy endings. It was really crazy to find out that Andy was innocent and spent all those years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. It’s sad to think but im sure that happens to many people unfortuanately. The movie also shows that prison is not a fun place to be. I thought it was nice to see Red and Andy become such good friends. They were both good people. I enjoyed the movie overall and I will always remember it.

The Shawshank Redemption deals with the trails and tribulations of Andy Dufresne during his double life sentence at the prison for a crime he claims to have never committed. Frank Darabont (known recently for his work on season 1 of The Walking Dead) crafts a timeless film that keeps the viewer in a trance. It’s a well rounded film with beautiful cinematography and performances coupled with a well written adapted screenplay by Darabont himself from a short Stephen King story. It’s a shame that it lost to Forrest Gump for best picture since Forrest Gump was mostly story while The Shawshank Redemption had it all. Anyway, I seem to be digressing into a rant. Where was I? Oh, yes. The film is riddled with memorable scenes and humanizes these criminals behind stone walls. Though, not all are humanized. The guards and the warden are more villainous than the men the keep under control. From Andy somehow ceasing to be an inmate and assimilating himself into the lives of the faculty, to his grand escape, the film provides many situations to marvel at and to revisit in the future. Although the movie was a box office flop, it is truly a timeless classic that will stand the test of time.

The Shawshank Redemption was an amazing movie. I loved it so much I got my parents to watch it. A memorable part was when the head master of the jail took out the new guy and shot him because he was willing to testify for Dufrain in court. Then he tried to cover it up by making it seem like he had escaped. Another interesting scene was in the beginning when the men first arrive to jail and the chubby man is beat to death because he cried at night. I think both those scenes show how bad jail can be and unless you are in there experiencing it you have no idea what is going on in there. My favorite part was at the end when he escaped. It had me wondering as well of how could’ve escaped until they all saw the hole. He was a pretty smart man.

  51. Meagan Harty

The best part of the movie was when he made everyone believe that he had given up, when the truth was he had beet tbe system. He stumpped them, they had no idea. Although he broke out of jail that he shouldn’t have been in anyway, the way he brought joy and faith to all the people in the jail maxe you realize he was put there for a purpose, and he accomplished that purpose. I believe it fit into our unit because it showed how the really did not give him a fair trial and when they had circumstantial proof that he did not kill his wife and her lover, they destroyed all evidence and knowledge of anyone who could help him be set free.

  52. Anna Sever

I thought the dynamic between the warden and Andy was really fitting with the justice unit. The warden is meant to be there to help and take care of these men when really he is cruel and is not at all helping the prisoners. The warden had Tony shot for being willing to testify for Andy to prove his innocence just so Andy could keep doing the warden’s dirty work. The warden’s character did a really good job of representing corruption on all levels of the judicial system, and Andy really had no power no matter how many peoples’ taxes and such he did. I was really happy to see Andy take the money from the warden at the end and alert the authorities of the warden’s deplorable behavior.

  53. Erik Thorbecke

This was a great movie, I had many favorite parts in this movie but the one the that stood out the most in me was when Andy was very persistent in getting funds for some books. He started out by writing a letter every week and it took it six years for someone to respond with a check for $200. His persistence was showed even more when he wanted more books to build a library inside Shawshank. Eventually his request was fulfilled with a check for $500 just to shut him up with all those letters he would send every week. It was very important for someone with hard time to keep their mind entertained and for Andy this was it. Shawshank was the first prison with an official library and that was due in all to Andy and his persistence to get what he wanted.

  54. Dolores

The most memorable moment from the movie that I thought was when Tommy reveals that an inmate at another prison, Elmo Blatch, claimed to have committed a nearly identical murder to the one Andy was condemned to. Andy approaches Norton with this information, but the warden fears Andy may reveal his corruption should he be released. Norton places Andy in solitary confinement and threatens to destroy the library if he should talk, then orders Hadley to kill Tommy looking like he was trying to escape. I thought it was really eye opening because we finally find out that Andy really didn’t kill his wife even though everything pointed out to him. It’s sad because even the proof may point to the one being prosecuted it may be possible that they are or are not the murderer. Only the person who committed the crime knows the truth. It also always gets me thinking why they do the things they do. I also thought it was sad that Tommy died because he became one of Andy’s closest friends and he was the only one who new the truth of the crime. Andy couldn’t have done anything because he was being punished by Norton. I though Norton actually valued Andy that he would be lenient with Andy since he does every thing for him but I guess the guy was just a bad man.

  55. I loved the movie. It was a fantastic piece of cinematic adventure. I loved seeing his whole plan come together at the end and finally seeing how he did it all and how clever his plan was. Very moving film and also made me question our own justice system. Do we always get the right person and how can we better out justice system so we always can find if the person truly is innocent or guilty? I guess it’s all just idealism, but it’s the idealists that have helped America become better. Oh, Before I forget. Here Mrs. Jones, since you couldn’t find a good transfer from justice to food, I hope you, as well as anyone else who watches this, enjoys.

The movie “Shaw-shank Redemption” was my favorite movie of the year so far. I’m really into the criminal justice unit, So this movie just really caught my eye. I loved everything about it, but i would have to say one the most memorable parts for me would have to be the ending. I loved how in the end Andy got away with escaping and keeping all the money he worked hard to earn for while in jail. Red’s liberation contributed to the excitement of it all. His will to follow his promise to Andy shows true friendship, and made their relationship strong. I also found memorable how Andy was able to escape, and his smart mentality throughout the movie. Even his cell-mates honored him once he escaped, Andy was the life in all the stories. I didn’t know such person can do that. Overall, i really enjoyed this movie.

  57. Daniel Loest

Throughout most of the movie, The Shawshank Redemption it seemed to me as if Andy had been falsely incriminated. He never quite took on the natural behavior of a prisoner, as the others had. He was, however, able to relate to them, seeing that he had made mistakes in his life, but was unsure if the punishment was actually worthy. Andy never stood out as being guilty, especially as his character progressed and the developing knowledge of his situation became vibrant. His imprisonment was most noticeably the definite sentence for life when Tommy was killed. The justice unit corresponds with the life of Andy Dufresne in the way that sometimes situations are overlooked, or under investigated. Like a child being convicted as an adult for murder, their life is put into question, as was Andy’s, and both are perceived in an intimate way for what is known as cold blooded murder. Jurors and others tend to decide too quickly at times for one’s conviction, even if there is blatant evidence as to what happened or if none, and don’t always take into practice hints of doubt and the seriousness of life sentence or death penalty.

  58. Sierra Smith

“Shawshank Redemption” definitely left me on the edge of my seat throughout the movie, which really surprised me because usually my interest in movies leave as soon as I see that it’s not a romantic comedy. The part of the movie that really stuck out to me was when Brooks left Shawshank and was out in the world. He looked so lost and he didn’t know what to do with himself. He was somebody at Shawshank and to the outside world he was just an old man. I love elderly people so that’s probably why that part struck a big chord with me. Brooks was a cute old man and it was heartbreaking to see someone so lonely in a world that most of us are comforted by, and vise versa with him in the prison. Overall it was a very entertaining and informative movie, perfect for this unit!

  59. kaitlyn williams

I’ve never seen this movie before so i didnt really know what to expect. The most memorable moment of the movie was when Andy told Red to go to a certain spot to find money and a letter. I like that Andy escaped sucessfully because he was convicted of a crime that he didnt commit. His escape was brilliant and very interesting to watch how exactly he escaped. I enjoyed the movie, and would recommend watching it. It really tied the whole justice unit together and was perfect to watch at the end of the unit.

  60. Kyeana Calderon

I have always seen Shawshank Redemption on my television as i skip to find a good show or movie to watch, but I’ve never actually sat down to watch it. Huge mistake because after watching this movie its been honestly one of the best movies i have seen. Its incredible that he was innocent the whole time, yet he was so generous to everyone. I felt like he had a plan to get out, but i never knew escaping through that hole behind the poster was one of them. Now i give him major props because that was one of the most brilliant things i have ever seen. Also to crawl 500yrs was incredible! I guess things happen for a reason right? Morgan Freeman’s character finally got out and the prison got a library, and also they got caught for embezzling money, which serves them right for killing that poor guy. All i have to say is that this movie was amazing and i really enjoyed every second of it!

  61. Howard Yu

The most memorable part of the movie has to be when Red (Morgan Freeman) was explaining the escape of Andy, by saying “… All it takes is just pressure and time”. This quote to me is very meaningful because of validity, Andy has suffered the injustice of the judicial system yet he remained calm and calculative under pressure, over the years planning his escape and plotting the upheaval of the corruption within the walls of Shaw shank Prison. The movie was truly captivating, and enticing I would recommend this to anyone.

  62. Geoffrey Pugh

We recently watched “The Shawshank Redemption” and I thought the scene in witch the old prison librarian wrote he was there right before he hung himself really memorable. It showed how some people having been imprisoned for most of their life’s cant asimilate back in to society. I found this interesting because it showed the harm of imprisonment when someone has lived imprisoned for most of their lives. I think that is why there are so many repeat offenders. When people accept prison as their home they are likely to commit a crime for what red says a need for order.

  63. Rene Gomez

I was on Twitter today and “Oober Facts” mentioned that “The Shawshank Redemption” was a box office flop. I was surprised, because the movie was amazing.
The part I found memorable was how Andy plotted everything from beginning to end. The thought to do everything was so complex and in the end EVERYTHING made a lot more sense. Creating an an imaginary person, that later became his new identity, carving a hole to escape the prison, finding freedom and creating justice. I think everyone else had the same reaction I did when everything unfolded in the end. I am not sure if certain things happen in real life prison but that prison was so pitiless the guards were cruel enough to beat an inmate to death.
If this movie was not narrated by Morgan Freeman I wouldn’t have been so interested. Morgan Freeman should narrate more movies, he should narrate my life.

  64. Nick Rudolph

This movie was tremendously thought out and perfect executed. The actors couldn’t have been more fitting. It wad inspiring to see someone who almost has no reason to live, turn no only his life around but his entire prison around into something that can be looked at and be made example of. It makes me never want to go to jail, but also makes me want to do more squats

  65. Shawshank Redemption was an amazing movie, I loved it so much. There were so many memorable parts in this movie for me, my favorite would have to be the ending. Andy was so incredibly bloody brilliant when he proved to warden that he could and did outwit him. By Andy becoming a free man “crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side.” Forgive the quote but it is a perfect metaphor for Andy. I had always know that the prison system is very corrupted and although government was created to protect the people, one shouldn’t trust it. What the warden did to Tony was incredibly wrong and cowardly but in the end he got what he deserved. Did wrong to many in that prison…. Anyways, I deeply admire Andy’s intelligence and humility, even though he was in prison for 20 years he still did right and not wrong. Kept his innocence and did all that he could to help his fellow inmates with giving them a real library and giving some of the men the opportunity to earn their diploma. One of the messages I personally received from this movie is that it pays to have an education. Andy is an incredible person, how he cared and loved Red enough to send him to Mexico where they could live out the rest of there days free as a bird, endless possibilities. All in all I found this movie greatly inspirational and would recommend it to anyone.

  66. Jesse Daniels

Shawshank Redemption was needless to say, captivating, moving, educational, humorous and inspiring. A great film, there was many powerful and thought provoking scenes to discuss. One that remains outstanding in my mind, is the string of events as Brooks realizes the world he has rejoined, is not at all the one he left. From the cars to the people to himself, everything has transformed; a scary, overwhelming situation he proceeds to hang himself. These actions and his realization underscores the reality inmates must cope with. Individuals who have spent more than half their life behind prison walls see their social etiquette, understanding and confidence as a average citizen dwindle away as time goes on. To feel so detached from human kind and figure out how to adapt instantly is hard to fathom, and a valid argument for those who oppose trying minors as adults.

  67. Kalani Villegas

After learning about the justice system over the past few weeks in class, I thought that my decision which voted in favor of juveniles being charged as adults was without a doubt where I stood on the matter. However, this movie made me rethink my personal decision and outlook on several occasions.  Throughout the movie, audience members find themselves connecting and empathizing with the convict characters.  How they genuinely change overtime through their sentence and become rehabilitated. Then again, once Brooks and Red were ready to be released on parole they had no desire for  life on the outside and preferred being locked up because they became institutionalized and they didn’t know how to live life decades after they were imprisoned.  I found myself wanting them to have a better chance at life; and wanting them to escape. The part of the Shawshank Redemption that I cannot get out of my head is when Andy played the Italian opera record on the sound system to all the inmates.  With how peaceful and humane it was, I thought it showed another side to the “hard” inmates.  I definitely was sympathizing over the old time jailbirds, however if this movie were to be made present day I don’t think I would have. Prisons now days are really scary and have higher security. There is no where near as much leniency as there was in the 50′s and 60′s when the movie was set. They had it easy (more or less) and weren’t so tattooed and intimidating.  So it was easy to side with them.

  68. Rigo Barrera

I believe this is my 4th or 5th time seeing this movie and it never gets old. This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Every time I watch it I catch something i didn’t notice before. A few scene that i found memorable were the events leading up to Brook’s death. Brooks states, “ I can’t believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid, but now they’re everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.” This shows how long he has kept out of contact with the real world and proves what Red said of Brooks being institutionalized. Another part of the film that found interesting was the Tommy character. When his character first appeared it gave the audience a real look at how long Andy had been in prison. Andy was convicted in 1947(according to IMDB) and Tommy’s character was one that would have been influenced by 60’s culture.

  69. Denisse Tadillo

I thought the movie did a good job demonstrating how injustice courts could be. During trial, the prosecutors had no evidence Dufrain killed his wife and lover but had clues which led them to the conclusion that Dufrain was guilty. This just shows the way judges could make mistakes and send an innocent man to prison. It also showed the way criminals have very little chance of rehabilitating if sent to prison for so many years. Brooks had spent most of his life in jail so when released he had nothing to look forward to but death. And when Redd was let out, all he could think about was committing yet another crime just to go back to jail. This creates a good point of why juveniles should not be sent to jail, there they will have no way of rehabilitating and will get used to that life style.

  70. Paulena Abarca

The movie “Shaw-Shank Redemption” was so depressing yet hopeful. I found that Andy did the right thing in the end. I never guessed that he had been digging a hole on the other side if his poster, the whole ending was a complete mystery for me and I enjoyed that. I found that the most memorable part of the whole movie was Andy’s knowledge. When he used his knowledge to hide money away and to create another person who does not even exist, while still in jail is remarkably cleaver. I enjoy all the movies we watch in ERWC and found this one to be my favorite overall.

  71. Elizabeth Fierros

My first impression of Shawshank was that it was going to be a really long movie with a boring trial. I was so wrong! What made this movie so interesting was that one never knew what was going to happen next, or what kind of trouble the prisoners will get into. I also thought it was so amazing the fact that Andy was so smart, and the whole time he was there he was there he was scheming his escape. The part of the movie that annoyed me the most was when the guards killed the guy who knew that Andy was innocent. Overall this movie was amazing!

  72. Monica Medina

I thought “Shawshank Redemption” was a great movie it really portrayed how being in prison means basically giving your life up to be treated as an animal instead of the human you are. Though when your in prison for a crime you did not commit it leads to the unjustice of our justice system to be thought up as nothing but a lie. And how one innocent man/ woman can be accused of the most horrifying actions like murder. Going back into juvenile justice the same can happen with a child of 12 years if there sentenced to life in prison by the time they come out all they knew about life and it’s meaning has vanished maybe that’s why most prisoners who come out of prison end up going back in.

  73. Jesse Toyooka

I posted this one before but it didn’t put it up. Well i really liked the movie because it was very interesting. It was funny how Dufrain wanted that little chizzel and red thought he was going to break out of prison with it. but when he looked at it he thought it would take 200 years to break out when Dufrain did it in 20 years. It was also very interesting when they found out that he didn’t kill his wife and that other man, and that the warden didn’t want him to leave. This is a great movie about a wrongfully accused man who steals his freedom back.

  74. Kaitlynn Fern

I found “The Shawshank Redamption” to be a great film. Showing the dark side of prisons, not that there’s really a bright side, but the face that so much wrong can go on in onwe place is quite shocking. A part that really stood out to me was when Tommy came in and told that he new the guy that really killd Andy’s wife and her lover and the warden had him killed. All because andy had gotten in to deep with the wardens buisness. This is a great film about a man who makes the best out of a tough situation and finds a way out of it all in the end.

  75. Karina Jimenez

I thought “The Shawshank Redemption” was a great movie. The most memorable part was definately the ending. It’s incredible how we spent so many years digging an escape tunnel. No one ever saw that coming. I thought he was either hang himself or just die in prision. It’s sad how there are prisoners that are actually guilty and never get a second chance. The movie shows the dark, twisted side of prison and what goes on the inside.

  76. Tony Moreno

Shawshank had a lot of memorable parts of the movie. But what stood out to me was the beginning when Dufrain showed up at Shawshank, and when he got beers for all of the inmates. I felt when Dufrain showed up Redd foreshadowed the movie because he talked about him and they became friends. When Dufrain got them beers I felt like that was a turning point. He befriended the guys and the guards so his life in prison became better and more smooth.

  77. Alfredo Cruz

I wasn’t here the first day so i guess i only missed out on the part where he was sentenced. i really enjoyed what i watched of this movie, it had great actors. Andy Dufrain was a smart guy, obviously, and he pretty much took over the prison himself. He found the weakest spot of the same jail and he managed to escape. I really liked the part where Morgan Freeman was set free and he just felt lost once he was free, because he was so used to his life in prison and he was so old. I also liked how he found the mark his friend made once he was free. I really feel sorry for the people that are sentenced life in prison and then suddenly are just set free, i’m saying there shouldn’t be a life to prison sentenced im just saying that the court system in this nation needs to shape up a bit.
